Hundreds of Sikh students were spreading warmth in downtown Toronto Tuesday, Dec. 27.
The youth distributed warm wishes and clothing to the homeless. The Downtown Seva Initiative was organized by the Sikh Youth Federation, which is made up of Sikh Student Associations at Peel Region high schools. “Seva literally means selfless service (in Punjabi),” said event organizer Manjot Singh. “What we’re doing here in Toronto is helping out anyone who does need our help, who needs our support.” About 200 youth gave out nearly 300 care packages, which contain sweaters, hats, gloves, socks along with food and toiletries, to street people.
When so many people are celebrating (during this) joyous time of year, we have to remember that others might not be in that warmth. They might be out in the cold.
The youth gathered at Yonge-Dundas Square and branched off from there in 12 groups. The initiative began one year ago when 150 care packages were distributed. “We have a huge team that brings these students together, that will bring the donations together,” said Singh.
